Women of the Bible Lesson 19 Puah and Shiphrah: A Story of Faithfulness

Today we will look at two unsung heroes: Puah and Shiphrah, the Hebrew midwives whose faithfulness to God protected a generation of Hebrew boys from genocide.   We read the brief account of their lives in Exodus 1:15-20, The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”  The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”  So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them fami...

Women of the Bible Lesson 18 Jochebed: A Story of Faith

Today we will be studying Jochebed, the mother of Moses.  Jochebed is not named in the Exodus 2 account of Moses’ birth, however, she is named in both Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59.  Exodus 6:20, “Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived 137 years.” (NIV)   Numbers 26:59, “the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.” (NIV)   Jochebed is notable as the first person in the Bible to have a name with the divine element yah, a shortened form of YHWH.i  In Hebrew her name Jokebed means “Yahweh is glorious.”  Jochebed, like every other Hebrew of her day, had been crying out to God for a deliverer.  We know from reading Exodus that Pharaoh was trying to prevent the multiplication of the Hebrews by ordering the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill every male child born to the Hebrews.  ...

Women of the Bible Lesson 17 Jael: A Story of Courage Part 15 Spiritual Weapons

2 Corinthians 10:4-6, “For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), Being in readiness to punish every [insubordinate for his] disobedience, when your own submission and obedience [as a church] are fully secured and complete.” (AMPC)  Today we will be looking at our final spiritual weapon: Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is a powerful weapon when we use it.  The problem is that too many believers have not been properly taught how to use it.   Far too often, believers feel that thanksgiving is what we give after we've received the things that we've requested from the Lord. However, this is not acc...

Women of the Bible Lesson 16 Jael: A Story of Courage Part 14 Spiritual Weapons

2 Corinthians 10:4-6, “For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), Being in readiness to punish every [insubordinate for his] disobedience, when your own submission and obedience [as a church] are fully secured and complete.” (AMPC)      Today we will be looking at our next spiritual weapon: Our Testimony.  1 Peter 3:15-16, But in your hearts set Christ apart [as holy—acknowledging Him, giving Him first place in your lives] as Lord. Always be ready to give a [logical] defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope and confident assurance [elicited by faith] that is within you, yet [do it]...

Women of the Bible Lesson 15 Jael: A Story of Courage Part 13 Spiritual Weapons

2 Corinthians 10:4-6, “For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), Being in readiness to punish every [insubordinate for his] disobedience, when your own submission and obedience [as a church] are fully secured and complete.” (AMPC)     We will continue looking at the spiritual weapon of fasting. To recap, fasting is demonstrated throughout the Bible. Fasting brings many benefits for believers, including, causing our flesh to submit to our spirit, bringing revelation, and leading to deliverance.     Today we will focus on some of the reasons (purposes) believers fast today. Bear in mind...
