Identity in Christ Series: Week Ten. I Am Wonderfully Made
Mankind was created by God. In creating each of us, God placed in each of us a part of Himself. He authorized us to have dominion over the earth and all of creation. He had/has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. He invested in our formation in the womb, and He made us wonderfully.
First we see that after God had completed all of creation, by the Word of His Power, he took dust with His hands and formed a man. Instead of speaking man into being, God, the Almighty Creator of the universe, stooped down low and formed man.
Then the LORD God formed [that is, created the body of] man from the dust of the ground… (Genesis 2:7a AMP)
Wow!!!! What happened next is even more mind blowing!!! He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (His spirit).
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being [an individual complete in body and spirit]. (Genesis 2:7b AMP)(Emphasis mine)
Then the dust [out of which God made man’s body] will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. (Ecclesiastes 12:7 AMP) (Emphasis mine)
Hold up one second. “And God said,…” (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20).
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to (limited to, consistent with) their kind: livestock, crawling things, and wild animals of the earth according to their kinds”; and it was so [because He had spoken them into creation]. Genesis 1:24 (AMP) (Emphasis mine)
When God created the animals, fish, birds, and reptiles, He spoke and they were alive and breathing. They could move and reproduce, eat and rest. But with man it was different. God breathed His life, His spirit into man. He gave us part of Himself.
Of the other creatures it is said that they were created and man; but of man that he was formed, which denotes a gradual process in the work with great accuracy and exactness. (Copied from Matthew Henry’s Commentary, Biblegateway.com.)
Additionally, in Genesis 1:26-28 we see that God gave mankind authority over the rest of creation. This authority is a reflection of the attribute of godlikeness He put into man when He breathed the breath of life into him.
Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps andcrawls on the earth.”
So God created man in His own image, in the image andlikeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.
And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subjugate it [putting it under your power]; and rule over (dominate) the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28 AMP)
Man is God’s representative on earth. Like God, man: is intelligent, has a moral nature, has the ability to communicate, and has an emotional nature. Unlike the rest of God’s creation (animals) man: is a worshipper, has the ability to articulately communicate, and has the ability to create. We have the right, responsibility, and authority to rule and care for this physical world.
To continue, God is the Potter, we are the clay! When we declare this we are acknowledging that God has the right to mold us and shape us into any vessel He desires.
Yet, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our Potter, And we all are the work of Your hand. (Isaiah 64:8 AMP)
How foolish can you be?He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the clay!Should the created thing say of the one who made it, “He didn’t make me”? Does a jar ever say,“The potter who made me is stupid”? (Isaiah 29:16 NLT)
For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above–spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. (Ephesians 2:10 AMP)
Here we see that God not only created us as a potter creates a vase, but He also prepared in advance the path He desires for us to walk. He planned before we were born the “works” He had in store for us.
We know that not everyone follows the path God has planned for their lives. Many choose to go their own way and follow after their own desires and lusts. Others accept the gift of salvation but never grow in their knowledge of Christ. They are born again, however they do not walk in the abundant life God has for them. Even those who are walking in close connection what the Savior can veer from the path. I know I have made many a wrong turn in my day. However, our beautiful Potter forgives and never gives up on us. When we repent He redirects us back to the path.
Additionally, God continues His creative forming of each individual who has been or ever will be born into this world. The Creator God takes personal interest and invests His time and energy into each life that is formed in the womb.
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were appointed for me, When as yet there was not one of them [even taking shape]. (Psalm 139:16 AMP)
Your hands have formed and made me altogether. (Job 10:8a AMP)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you [and approved of you as My chosen instrument], And before you were born I consecrated you [to Myself as My own]; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5 AMP)
Listen to Me, O islands andcoastlands, And pay attention, you peoples from far away. The LORDhas called Me from the womb; From the body of My mother He has named Me. (Isaiah 49:1 AMP)
For the LORD, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb says this, “I am the LORD, Maker of all things, Who alone stretches out the heavens,Who spreads out the earthby Myself. (Isaiah 44:24 AMP)
Finally, God made us wonderful and we are valuable to Him!
For You formed my innermost parts; You knit me [together] in my mother’s womb. I will give thanksand praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13-14 AMP)
The Hebrew word for the phrase “wonderfully made” means; to distinguish, separate, set apart. In week one we discussed the fact that we are all masterpieces created specifically by God. When He made us He distinguished us from all of the rest of creation and he set us apart.
Behold, children are a heritageand gift from the LORD, The fruit of the womb a reward. (Psalm 127:3 AMP)
Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are far more valuable than many sparrows. (Luke 12:7 AMP)
We must never allow the enemy to deceive us into believing that we are “less than” or “not good enough”, “not pretty, smart, … enough!” Our God gave us part of Himself when He breathed into us the breath of life. He gave us authority on the earth. He created us intentionally with a plan and purpose. He took personal interest in forming us in our mother’s wombs. He made each of us Wonderfully!!!!!
You are fearfully and wonderfully made!!!!
